STRIVING TO CONSERVE NATURAL RESOURCES THROUGH EDUCATION AND PRACTICES
The Earth Day season is celebrated by people all across the country, each in their own way. At the Reserve, we invite 4th graders from Northeast Oklahoma to enjoy a conservation program by "Billy B" the song and dance science guy. "Billy B." has been educating 4th graders at the Reserve in an entertaining way for over 10 years. Several of the teachers have been bringing their students from the beginning, while others are new to the experience. This year we had 4th graders from 13 different elementary schools representing 4 counties in Oklahoma. There were over 1300 students, parents and teachers at the show.
Getting these students unloaded from their busses, escorted to the amphitheater for the show and then escorted back to their correct bus for the trip home required a lot of helpers. For this, we look to the Claremore FFA and Claremore High School Science Club. Getting these high school students to come to a "Billy B" might seem difficult. However, most all of them saw "Billy B" when they were in the 4th grade and enjoy coming back to see him again.
Other long time supporters of this program are the Days Inn on Highway 66 just south of Country Club Road. The Days Inn has been providing a room for "Billy B" from the beginning. We also couldn't do the show without the help of Mr. Hickey, a volunteer from the Rogers County Veterans Center, who comes over every year with his golf cart to provide students with mobility restrictions a lift from the busses to the show and back again. The assistance from all these individuals helped to make this years program a success.
While this years program is now over, work and planning has already started for next years show. Look at our spring Calendar for the date of next years "Billy B." program.
