CONSERVATION LANDSCAPING

IMPROVING WILDLIFE HABITAT AND WATER QUALITY, ONE  YARD AT A TIME.

Why Consider a Conservation Landscape?

1. It’s an enjoyable past-time, and gives you something healthful to do outside.
2. Conservation landscapes add beauty and value to any house.
3. Conservation landscapes attract birds, butterflies and other wildlife close to the house so they can be easily seen.
4. It helps improve water quality in the area and lessens storm water run-off.
5. It’s fun, and we all need more of that!

How to get started…  … First, gather some information:
Lots of programs, lots of information

… Second, make a plan
● What else is important about your yard?
●Do you want privacy, views from your windows of gardens, flowering trees and shrubs, a windbreak for north winds, or summer shade for south-facing windows?

How to get started…… Third, try to build in stages

Several small projects are more likely to turn out the way you want than is one large, or all encompassing landscaping event

.

Things to be aware of…
Overhead power lines. Don’t plant trees you will have to trim or cut down later.

Underground cables and pipelines. This can be an inconvenient, and costly oversight.

Be aware of how plantings and features will affect neighbors. Small trees will grow tall and other plants will expand as they grow.
